What is the McKenzie Method in Physiotherapy?

What is the McKenzie Method in Physiotherapy?

The McKenzie Method is used in physiotherapy to assess injuries or discomfort of the musculoskeletal system, with focus on the client and their ability to self-manage.  This means that anything that affects the spine, joints, muscles, or tendons can be evaluated in physiotherapy by using the Mckenzie Method.  Our physiotherapists at Nepean Sports Medicine and Physiotherapy Centre can use the McKenzie Method to form a treatment plan and improve symptoms.

How does the McKenzie Method work?

In physiotherapy the McKenzie Method emphasizes patient involvement in self-managing their condition and regaining functionality.  It comprises four main steps:

  1. Assessment:  The physiotherapist will begin with an initial assessment to identify the cause of the pain and understand the client's specific condition.
  2. Classification:  Based on the assessment, the physiotherapist will create a personalized treatment plan that includes exercises, posture advice, and strategies for self-managing pain.  The client will be classified into one of the four main syndromes of the McKenzie Method: Derangement syndrome, Dysfunction syndrome, Postural syndrome, or Other.
  3. Treatment:  Clients will receive education about their condition, the McKenzie Method itself, and how to safely perform their exercises from their physiotherapist.
  4. Prevention:  Clients will be empowered to manage their pain independently and prevent future occurrences through the exercises and treatment provided by the physiotherapist.
