MPC Tips: New Year Goal Setting

MPC Tips: New Year Goal Setting

New year, new YOU! Make the most out of 2026 with some goal setting tips from our Mental Performance Consultant at Nepean Sports Medicine and Physiotherapy Centre.

What is Mental Performance Consulting?

Mental Performance Consulting (MPC) is a service that provides mental skills and strategies for individuals or teams to help them achieve their optimal performance, whether it’s for sports, work, hobbies, or just everyday life. Mental performance consultants use evidence-based techniques like goal-setting, positive self-talk, and visualizations to help create a more resilient and positive mindset, so that you can succeed in your desired areas of life.

Why Goal Setting is Important

Sometimes certain dreams and desires can be so big or complicated, it’s hard to know where to begin when trying to achieve them. Well, goal setting does just that! Goal setting helps in providing direction, structure, and motivation to what you do; making an idea that feels vague and unattainable, achievable.

We often set a lot of new goals or ‘resolutions’ when the new year comes around and more than we’d like to admit, they often get forgotten or given up early into the year. Now that we’ve entered another new year, this is the best time to properly set your goals. Because 2026 is YOUR year!

Set S.M.A.R.T. Goals

Goal setting provides a road-map to where and how you should be focusing your time when aiming to achieve a certain goal. A great technique you can use to structure your goals is S.M.A.R.T. goals. When deciding to set a goal, you want to make sure you’re following these simple steps:

S - Specific: Your goal should be clear and well-defined.
Ask yourself: What exactly do I want to achieve?

M - Measurable: You want to be able to track your progress and know when you’ve achieved your goal.
Ask yourself: How will I measure my success?

A - Attainable/Achievable: Your goal must be realistically possible to achieve given your current skills, time, and resources.
Ask yourself: Is this possible for me right now?

R - Relevant: Your goal should also matter to you and align with your current priorities.
Ask yourself: Why is this goal important to me?

T - Time-Based: Have a deadline for your goal.
Ask yourself: When will I achieve this?
